Sick of the Hours

Working too many hours I am. I wish there was balance in life but in Medicine there is no such thing (at least in residency). I am learning a lot but I am also missing a lot of quality time with my family--missing precious moments that if not seized at the moment they occur are lost forever. Many physicians do not care about the lack of time with their family and that I do not understand. A nonchalant attitude pervades any inquiry or comment about the amount of time spent at the hospital and not seeing the family (of course they (all the Head Docs) had to work harder than I).
I could keep going on about the research that shows that working so many hours is not only detrimental to the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of the physician but also the patients they treat but it is nothing more than venting at this point because nothing at this time will be done about it.
